Scheduled Rides

Frenchman’s Lake

Friday May 27, 2016

Loyalton to Frenchman Lake, Return by A24.

We’ve done this ride a number of times in the past. It’s around 44 miles and 1100 feet of climbing to the dam and back.

We will collect at all the major intersections. We’ll stop slightly longer at the Market-café (Wiggin’s Trading Post) at the intersection of highway 70 & Frenchman Lake Road and at the rest area across the dam. Both of these locations have restrooms.

To extend the ride we can ride to the left of the dam, towards the west, like we did the last two years. This would add 7 miles and 500-600 feet of up and down climbing. Also there’s the road to the right that goes to the boat ramp and campground.

To carpool we will meet at the Donner Camp Picnic Area off of 89 about 1/4 mile north of Alder Creek on the east side of the road. If we leave there at 9:00 we should be on our bikes around 9:45-10:00. If we all arrive at the Picnic area around 8:50 we should have enough time to transfer bikes and gear by 9:00.

In Loyalton we’ll park on the right side of the street near the big tree that’s comes after 4th Street (with the Burger and soft serve place on the corner). There’s a market-gas station with restrooms a short way past the parking spot.

There’s a write-up of this ride on the Velotahoe blog site at:

Gold Lake Out & Back to Round Lake Trailhead Meet at Donner Camp Picnic Area at 8:50

The forecast high in Sierra Valley is 80 degrees on Wednesday. I’m suggesting the out and back as the main option, although I could easily be talked into something else. The ride to the Round Lake Trailhead is about 40 miles and 4,500 feet of climbing. Anyone wanting to test their legs further can ride down to the intersection of 89 which adds about 14 miles and 2,000 feet of climbing in the sun.

Here’s a link to the Garmin data for when we did this ride to the Round Lake Trailhead in July last year.

There’s a more detailed description on the velotahoe website that does the out & back all the way to highway 89.

We will collect at all the major intersections and the turnaround point. There’s a market-café at Bassets which has restrooms, food and drink. Anyone not wanting to do the entire ride can turnaround at some point and wait for the faster group to catch them on the way back. If you decide to turn around please make sure someone in the group that’s continuing knows what you’re doing.

This ride has also been posted at and you may get an email from that site as well.

To carpool we will meet at the Donner Camp Picnic Area off of 89 about 1/4 mile north of Alder Creek on the east side of the road. Let’s meet there at 8:50 and leave at 9:00. It’s about a 30 minute drive to the start of the ride which should get us on the road around 9:45, early enough to miss the hottest part of the day.

We will park at the intersection of 89 & 49 which is a mile west of Sattley and A15 where 89 splits off north to go to Graeagle.

Please RSVP on velotahoe or by emailing me at My cell is 530-414-5307.

Also, I’m spending Thursday and Friday nights in Carson City. I’m planning on biking in that area on Friday and Saturday. The Geneoa – Diamond Valley Lollipop and Markleeville to Lake Alpine are just a couple of the options I’m contemplating. Let me know if you’d be interested in biking in this area Friday or Saturday
