Markleeville Passes

There are multiple options to ride some of the passes around Markleeville. All possible routes will start with the West Side of Monitor from Wolf Creek Picnic area.

The shortest route will be simply to return to the cars from there. That’s about 22 miles and 2750 feet of climbing.

For the longer routes there is a choice. We can descend the east side of Monitor and go back up. The east side of Monitor is the most difficult of the 5 Death Ride climbs, but is very doable as you can see from the Option 4 table below – 42 miles 5780 feet of climbing, less distance but about 1300 feet more than the Gold Lake Loop route last Wednesday. There is no place to pick up water of food on this route.

On the other hand, we can go back to Wolf Creek. Stop at the cars to eat and camel up. Then we could go up Ebbetts. This is the Option 2 Table which is about 45 miles and 5360 feet of climbing. This isn’t much less effort than doing both sides of Monitor, but the difference is you don’t have to be as committed to the ride. If you’re on a hill and get tired or run out of time, you just turn around and go back to the cars. The long extension of Option 2 is Option 3 – go on to the top of Pacific Grade. In this case you’re committed to returning up the west side of Ebbetts which is by far the easiest of the Death Ride climbs. I’ve heard from Geoff that there is a place to pick up water in Hermit Valley.

If we decide to do Option 4 as the middle option then the long option is to go up Ebbetts after returning to the cars. This is Option 5.

There are many way to combine the passes and start from different locations, but the above options should be a good start.
